Former presidential adviser Karl Rove says although it may be early for the many GOP presidential hopefuls blanketing the country to actually declare they are seeking the nomination, if they wait too long, it will be difficult to amass the funds and ground troops for a run. Rove also said Thursday on Fox News that although some on the long list have not made it official, they “are all running.”

“My sense is that we’ve got plenty of time,” Rove said, but “there are enough candidates out there asking people to be for them that if you get in much past early or mid-July, you’re probably going to have a greater difficulty in amassing the ground troops, and the volunteers, and the fundraisers, and the money to conduct a campaign.

“But let’s not kid ourselves — these people are all running,” he said. “They’ve all [got] their sort of state PACs . . . some of them have had exploratory committees. They’ve all found a way to move around the country in a very aggressive fashion. And why? Because they wanted to ask people to be for them before they became a candidate.

“Just imagine you’re somebody sitting in Iowa, New Hampshire, or South Carolina, and a candidate thinks enough of you to ask your support before they become an official candidate — or maybe even before they even form an exploratory committee,” Rove said. “It’s flattering, and human nature being what it is — it matters.”

Rove said the challenge for those seeking the nomination at this point is to show the voters why President Barack Obama should not be re-elected and where they stand on the issues — even those who have not officially declared intent.

“Well, look, this is the point at which it’s important to try and get — to understand why it is that they’re running. What is it that they want to achieve? What is it that they want — you know, what’s their vision of America?” Rove said. “What’s their beef with Obama? And probably most important of all, what is it that they’ve done that has given us a sense that they can actually do what they say they’re going to do once they get into office?

“I think the American people . . . they understood President Obama, then Senator Obama, didn’t have much of a record, but he had an inspirational message and  they took the message of hope and change and ran with it,” he said. “The question now is whether or not people feel as comfortable about that as they should. What is it about you that ought to give me confidence you're actually going to be able to do these things once you get into office?”
