Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman continues to take steps that could lead to a bid for the Republican presidential nomination next year. He has signed up for his first political event since resigning as President Barack Obama’s ambassador to China effective April 30, Politico reports.

The event is a May 21 meeting of the Windham Republican Committee. Huntsman will speak there after he gives a commencement speech at Southern New Hampshire University. Huntsman also has formed a federal political action committee, allowing him to raise money before he formally announces a presidential campaign.

Huntsman could draw substantial support from the GOP’s moderate wing, and there is talk that Obama sent him China to keep a formidable election foe outside the country.
