Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson doesn’t exactly conform to the views of most of his fellow Republicans. He wants to see U.S. troops withdrawn from Afghanistan and Iraq and favors abortion rights as well as legalizing marijuana.

Gary Johnson, GOP, president, 2012Some of those positions would make him an outlier even among Democrats. But that’s not stopping him from running for president. Johnson is scheduled to announce his bid Thursday on the steps of the New Hampshire State Capitol in Concord, The Hill reports.

He brags that he vetoed 750 bills during his eight-year tenure as governor — more vetoes than all of the nation’s other governors put together. That makes him a predecessor to Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Johnson tells The Hill.

“This is what I was doing before it was politically vogue,” he said.
