Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s presidential campaign appears to be on the verge of collecting the endorsement of Florida evangelical leader and president of the Florida Family Policy Council John Stemberger, which comes with an email list of 65,000 Florida evangelical voters, according to The Miami Herald
The move may come as a surprise to some in Michele Bachmann’s camp: Stemberger has been openly supportive of her in the past, and Bachmann delivered the keynote address at the council’s 6th Annual Policy Awards dinner less than three weeks ago.
“We really like Michelle Bachmann,” Stemberger said, “She has stellar credentials when it comes to our issues.”
But Stemberger then went on lay the groundwork for the expected Perry endorsement, explaining that he and the council needed to be “realistic” and “determine who’s viable” in light of the fact that he believes that “this is a two-man race between Mitt Romney and Rick Perry.”
Stemberger indicated that his official decision will be made after speaking with other evangelical leaders, but his intentions appear clear.
“There are too many trust issues with Mitt Romney,” he said. “Rick Perry is a lot more solid on our issues.”
