Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat warns Arab protesters that Israel knows how to defend itself and those who want to enter the Jewish state in a “hostile way” should think again. Barkat also said Monday on Fox News tactics of the terrorist group Hamas are reminiscent of Nazi Germany.
On Sunday, thousands of Arab protesters marched on Israel’s borders with Syria, Lebanon, and the Gaza Strip as Palestinians mourned the anniversary of Israel’s birth. The unprecedented demonstrations sparked clashes that left at least 15 people dead.
“I do not understand what brought people to try and cross the fence, which is the border from Syria, in a hostile way,” Barkat told Fox News’ Neal Cavuto. “And I think that — that people have to understand, if they try to across the border that way, in a hostile way, they’re risking their lives — I don’t recommend them to try that again.
“I know that Israel has to defend itself . . . and any reasonable person will understand that, if hundreds of people, maybe thousands of people, try to cross the border in a hostile way,” Barkat said. “And that’s exactly what happened.”
Cavuto asked whether Barkat believed the “Arab Spring” sweeping the Middle East emboldened the demonstrators who crashed the borders.
“Well, look what they teach at schools — if you see what the Hamas and some of the Arab world, definitely the Hamas, teach at schools, that it’s fine to die for your cause, it’s also fine to lie for your cause,” Barkat said. “And their charter is the destruction of Israel — you cannot resolve a conflict with such people.
“You have to manage the conflict — and the world sometimes feels it’s pushing us to resolve the conflict,” he said. “You can’t resolve the conflict when the other side wants to kill you and destroy your state.”
Cavuto then wondered whether it bothered Barkat that Israel is portrayed as a Middle East villain.
“Of course it bothers me, because . . . look at the facts — look at what the Hamas is saying — look at the fact that their whole strategy now is salami-style negotiation,” Barkat said. “The first slice was Gaza — by the way, they took over Gaza democratically — it reminds us a little bit [of] the Jewish people saw how Nazi Germany was taken democratically, with a very clear notion of what the Nazis wanted to do.
“The Hamas wants the destruction of Israel — and the first slice is Gaza,” he said. “What they want to do right now is maybe take over the West Bank — and that would put them in a good position, from their perspective, for better destruction of the State of Israel.
“They’re not interested in peace. Look at what they’re teaching their children.”
