Iowa State GOP Still Embraces Nuke Power

Iowa Republicans want to continue studying the expansion of nuclear power in the state, even as Japan faces a nuclear meltdown, the Des Moines Register reported Friday.

iowa, expansion, nuclear, power“Most people playing politics with this are playing politics with the future of Iowa,” said Senate Republican Leader Paul McKinley of Chariton. He said he was concerned that increasing federal regulations could hurt coal-powered plants.

A state Senate commerce committee discussed a bill that outlines how the Iowa Utilities Board should proceed with rates if a public utility built a planned nuclear plant. The House Commerce Committee approved a similar bill earlier this month.

During a Thursday press conference Republicans said that the legislation is not the end to the debate, but rather its part of the continuing discussion.

“I think the legislature is taking the appropriate steps to make sure what happened in Japan doesn’t happen here,” said House Leader Kraig Paulsen, a Hiawatha Republican.

The nuclear plants in Japan are quite different from any that would be built in Iowa.
