Giuliani: Obama Made Libyan Crisis ‘Murkier’

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani says the U.S. mission in Libya is “internally contradictory.” and President Barack Obama’s Monday national address to clarify the situation just made it “murkier.” Giuliani, a 2008 GOP presidential contender — who might be exploring another run — also warned the president’s half measures leaves the world in a “terrible situation.”

guliani, libya, obama, speech“The president’s speech tonight has made things even murkier than they were before,” Giuliani said on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight.” “I mean the whole purpose of this was to clarify our mission. Our mission is just internally contradictory.

“The president says our mission is to protect the people of Libya: Well, how do you protect the people of Libya and not be for regime change in Libya? Isn’t the danger to the people of Libya — [Moammar] Gadhafi?” Giuliani asked “So how do you reach the goal of protecting the people of Libya and leave Gadhafi where he is so he can murder more Libyans?”

Morgan asked Giuliani what the outcome will be if the United States does not utilize full force in Libya to topple Gadhafi.

“It leaves America, it leaves the Middle East, it leaves the world in a very terrible situation,” Giuliani said. “It leaves the people of Libya even more in danger than they were before. And that's why I say the president's speech is illogical.

“I mean if you were grading this on a Greek logic exam, you'd give him an ‘F.’ I mean the speech contradicts itself,” he continued. “It says limited action, we’re not going to go any further than just protecting the people of Libya, we’re not going to be for regime change — but you can't protect the people of Libya without regime change.

“Why are we there in the first place? Because Gadhafi was slaughtering his people,” Giuliani said. “How can you leave him there?”
