President Barack Obama’s approval rating for the first half of this year is less than 50 percent in three out of every four states, according to Gallup polling data.

The ratings in 37 of the 50 states range from a 26 percent rating in Utah to a 49 percent rating in Michigan, according to Gallup. In the 13 states where Obama gets a positive rating, it goes from a 50 percent rating in Minnesota to a 63 percent rating in Hawaii.

According to The Washington Examiner, Obama’s total in those 13 states is actually up slightly from the first six months of last year, when he ranked above 50 percent in only 10 states.

However, the place where Obama was most popular is Washington, D.C., where he was found to have an approval rating of 83 percent.

“The 50 percent approval mark is significant because post-World War II incumbent presidents who have been above 50 percent job approval on Election Day were easily re-elected,” according to Gallup. “Presidents with approval ratings below 50% have more uncertain re-election prospects.

“Historically, two presidents below 50% in their final approval rating before the election — George W. Bush and Harry Truman — won, and three, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H.W. Bush, lost.”
