Tea Party members are apt to stay home during the 2012 general elections if former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., wins the Republican presidential nomination, a prominent conservative action committee told Caller.com.

Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, compared Romney to 2008 presidential contender Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and says the Tea Party has “given up on Romney.”

Conservatives are wary of Romney because of the healthcare bill he passed in Massachusetts as governor that’s similar to the national plan touted by President Barack Obama, writes the Daily Caller.

freedomworks romney palinKibbe hopes a viable candidate emerges who conservative activists can agree on, such as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. “I like what she stands for. She’s authentic. And she does have juice with the grassroots,” he said.

Kibbe did admit that Palin has her work cut out for her. “I think she needs to prove that she can study up, consistently build a campaign machine,” he said. “She’s got to pass the same tests as everybody else. I think those are open question marks.”
