Former presidential candidate John Edwards, who was indicted Friday for misusing campaign funds to cover up an affair, can forget about reviving his political career, says communications consultant Peter Mirijanian, who has worked for top Democrats. Indeed, former Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., who recently resigned because of his own adultery, has a better chance for a comeback, Mirijanian writes on Politico.

“Although there are many second acts in American politics, suffice it say that John Edwards will not be one of them,” he argues. “The combination of the cover-up of the affair while his wife was battling cancer is too high a hill to climb. Although he may avoid jail time, he might lose his ability to practice law, which will leave him severely compromised.”

As for Ensign, he “may also face serious legal consequences, but with his wife pulling a Tammy Wynette and standing by her man, he actually has a better shot at some semblance of a comeback.”
