Democratic Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin says if Congress does not raise Dick Durbin, Debt Limit, Defaultthe debt ceiling it would be “totally unacceptable” and plunge the nation into another recession, Politico reports.

“To default on the American debt would plunge us into another recession, with even more jobs lost and businesses failing," Durbin said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“Those few — and I think totally irresponsible — members of Congress who say it really doesn’t make any difference if we default, are being irresponsible with one of the most significant economic issues that we’re going to face,” Durbin said.

Durbin also called on other members of the Senate to join his bipartisan deficit reduction team, which recently lost GOP Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma.
