New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has said repeatedly that he’s not running for president. But President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign isn’t convinced that the popular Republican governor is not a threat, so it’s skulking around for dirt on Christie, the New York Post reported Monday.

Chris Christie, Obama, campaign, RepublicanThe Obama campaign is compiling “opposition research” or information that could be used to hurt Christie should he change his mind on the presidential run, the newspaper reported. Obama operatives are talking to folks in New Jersey and New York who know Christie from his time as governor, as a candidate, and as a federal prosecutor.

Christie has been adamant in his denials about a potential White House run. Still, that hasn’t stopped pundits and GOP operatives from floating his name repeatedly as the GOP field remains unsettled.

Mike DuHaime, a spokesman for the governor, repeated those denials, saying, "This is just wishful thinking. He is not running, and he is not cracking the door open even a little bit."
Even so, DuHaime said, the efforts of the Obama campaign reflect on Christie work.

It's "an acknowledgment that Christie is a bold leader successfully taking on big challenges as governor. A leader who cuts spending and takes on the special interests tends to earn notice at the highest levels," he said.
