Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., the lawmaker who championed "freedom fries" as a menu item before he turned against the Iraq war, is no longer a leper among fellow Republicans because of his opposition to major U.S. combat operations in the Middle East, The New York Times reports. Jones, whose district includes the Marine Corps’ Camp Lejeune, N.C., even found some tea party backing for a bill that would have accelerated the military’s exit from Afghanistan.

The bill failed, but not by much, as 26 other GOP lawmakers bucked the House leadership to support the measure last month. The close vote put Jones at the center of the debate over America’s military policy, with the second-generation Southern lawmaker and conservative son of a Democrat insisting that U.S. wars have become too expensive for taxpayers to bear indefinitely

“We can’t police the world anymore,” he said. “We’re not the world power. It’s China. Our economy is in chaos.”

Polls show that growing numbers of Republicans want the United States to reduce its troop strength in Afghanistan, while some high-profile party members also question the value of continuing to stay there in large numbers.
