A 66-pitch perfect game was thrown by Michael Strem, a senior at St. Francis high school in Mountain View, Calif., last Wednesday. The feat, not surprisingly, set a new school record.

Throwing 48 strikes, Strem led his team to a 2-0 victory over Monta Vista in the first round of the California Central Coast Section Division I playoffs, the Mercury News reported.

Strem struck out eight of the 21 batters he faced during the 7-inning game, resulting in each batter receiving slightly over three pitches on average.

In comparison, in Major League Baseball, most starting pitchers are removed after delivering around 100 pitches, generally after the seventh inning. Overall, the average number of pitches thrown by each team during the game is just under 150 pitches, according to Baseball-Reference.com.

On Saturday, St. Francis will face either Valley Christian or Wilcox in the quarterfinals.

Observers predict Strem will likely find himself back on the mound in the quarterfinals following his remarkable performance the other week.
