The woman, who lives in central Brazil, had complained of stomach pain and dizziness, The Daily Mail reported. When doctors X-rayed her, they saw a fetus that was probably 20 to 28 weeks along when death occurred.

“It was possible to see the face, the bones of the arms, of the legs, the ribs and the spine,” a doctor told Brazilian news agency G1, quoted by the Mail.

G1 reported that the woman was pregnant 44 years ago but suffered “excruciating” pains and went to a healer in her village, the Mail said. He gave her some medicine.

“Her stomach didn't grow any more, the baby stopped moving and she thought it had been aborted," a hospital gynecologist told G1.

The woman told her Brazilian doctors that she doesn’t want the fetus removed, although one doctor told G1 that he will attempt to change her mind should there be any further health problems.

Although such a “stone baby” is extremely rare, another such case occurred in December in Colombia, this time in an 82-year-old woman, the Telegraph said.

The term “stone baby” comes from the fact that the body, because it can’t expel the fetus, which is too large to be reabsorbed, surrounds the fetus with calcium, the Telegraph said. The medical term for the occurrence is lithopedion.
