Only two have been produced at the special-orders atelier in Paris under the creative direction of Pierre-Alexis Dumas.

The magazine reports Hermes U.S. CEO Robert Chavezs said the basketball is designed to dribble, shoot and dunk. It can “certainly be used for play — the leather is sturdy, and why not make such a unique item come to life on the court?”

The high-dollar ball features the same hand-stitched technique as the brand's iconic Birkin bag. Its hue stands for “the sky, the ocean and all the beautiful pools that are a way of life in LA and Southern California," Chavez says.

Online commenters at MSN Now had mixed reactions about the basketball.

One poster wrote: “Has ANYBODY not heard the remark, "Let them eat cake"? As the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and at some point, it's images like a $13K basketball and the possibility that some person might throw that much $$$ away on such an absurdity, that leads to violent revolutions. What the H$ll are people thinking about.”

Another poster agreed. “Some people just have way too much money in their wallets, and too little brain in their heads.”
