1-Year-Old Hit By Bullet Fragment From Shooting Outside His Home

By Alexandra Ward   |   Friday, 29 Mar 2013 10:54 AM

A 1-year-old baby boy was hit by a bullet fragment Thursday afternoon after a gunman opened fire in Richmond, Calif., sending another bystander to the hospital.

Police said the child was in his grandmother's arms inside a home when multiple shots rang out and a bullet fragment lodged in his neck. The baby was rushed to Children's Hospital in Oakland in serious but stable condition.

"His condition is less critical than initially thought," Richmond Police Chief Chris Magnus told reporters after the incident. "We're putting everything we have into this case. You have a 1-year-old child that's literally in the arms of the grandparents there feeding him, and bullets come into the house. I am really angry about this. I am sickened. I am appalled."

Officers said a man in his 20s riding his bicycle in front of the apartment building where the 1-year-old was shot was also hit in the leg. He was taken to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition.

The shooting shook the community, with police officers visibly upset as they spoke to the media.

"We are not going to tolerate this in Richmond," Magnus told reporters. "This is completely unacceptable, and it's our highest priority to catch those involved."

Police have not yet uncovered a motive for the shooting, but speculated that it could possibly be gang-related. The suspect has not been found or identified.

There has been a string of crimes involving gun violence against children across the nation recently.

Last week, a 13-month-old was fatally shot in the head during a botched robbery attempt as his mother walked him in a stroller in Georgia. De'Marquise Elkins, 17, and a 14-year-old unnamed suspect have been arrested and charged with the murder.
