Rabbi's Book on Pope Featured in Argentina Synagogue's 150th Anniversary

Friday, 08 Nov 2013 05:41 AM

Argentina’s oldest Jewish congregation celebrates its 150 years of tradition next week, highlighted by Rabbi Sergio Bergmann’s presentation of a new book about Pope Francis, according to MercoPress news agency.

Congregación Israelita de la República Argentina held its first service in 1862 on the occasion of the High Holidays. Today, the synagogue also hosts a Jewish History Museum, and its building was named an Argentinian National Historical Monument in 2000.

Next week’s synagogue commemoration will be led Bishop Victor Manuel Fernandez, dean of the Catholic University of Argentina, and will include Jewish, Christian, and Islamic representatives.

Bergmann, recently elected to Argentina’s National Parliament, has titled his book “A Gospel According to Pope Francis.” It praises Francis — formerly Argentine Bishop Jorge Bergoglio — who became head of the world’s Catholics earlier this year.

According to the Catholic website Seasons of Grace, Francis has long had a warm relationship with the Argentine Jewish community.

The website quotes Rabbi David Rosen, director of interfaith affairs for the American Jewish Committee, who said that after the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, in which 85 people were killed, Francis repeatedly displayed “solidarity” with the Jewish community.

The future Pope signed a petition demanding justice and visited the rebuilt community center for talks with Jewish leaders.
