1976: Time Magazine: Ford's 'Blooper Heard 'Round the World'

President Gerald Ford speaks as Jimmy Carter listens during the first of three televised debates on September 23, 1976, held at Philadelphia's Walnut Street Theater. The other two were held in San Francisco, Calif., and Williamsburg, Va. During one of those debates Ford declared that Poland was not under the domination of the Soviet Union, which at the time it was. Time magazine called it "the blooper heard round the world." Ford's rival said the president had "disgraced our country." (AP Photo/File)
