BARCELONA - Acer aims to grab the top spot in the mobile PC market from leader Hewlett-Packard within the next 12 months, its chief executive told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

"We have a good chance to be number one within the next 12 months," Chief Executive Gianfranco Lanci said. "For sure we are going to exceed market (growth)" in 2010 sales, he added.

Lanci said his firm aimed to sell 2.5 million to 3 million smartphones in 2010, with the number to rise to 7 million to 8 million in 2011 and 12 million to 15 million in 2012, seeking to tap rapid market growth and eat into the shares of leaders Nokia, Apple and RIM.

Speaking at the annual Mobile World Congress trade fair in Barcelona, he said that Acer aimed to stick with two operating systems for its smartphones, Microsoft's Windows and Google's Android, adding that the most recent version of Windows was showing promise.

"Compared with (version) 6.5 for sure we see some improvement, but there is more work to be done. The software is probably still a little bit too heavy, but they are on the right track," Lanci said.

Microsoft launched its new Windows Phone 7 operating software at the Mobile World Congress on Monday.
