'Newt-mentum' Made Romney Better Candidate

The 11 days between the South Carolina primary, where Newt Gingrich blew a steady and confident Mitt Romney out of the water, and the Florida primary, where Romney beat Gingrich on Tuesday night by a decisive 14 percent (with 98 percent of precincts reporting), was perhaps the most crucial test yet for the Romney camp.

Not because if he didn't win Florida, or win it handily, Romney's campaign was over. Let's be honest — he's got enough money and organization to last through the 2016 election, if he were to need it.

And not because so-called "Newt-mentum" was building and Gingrich promised to go all the way to the Republican National Convention in Tampa with lukewarm endorsements from the likes of Sarah Palin and Herman Cain in hand.
