On the same day when 20 elementary school students were shot and killed inside Sandy Hook Elementary School, 22 children were stabbed in a Chenpeng, China, elementary school. Both incidents had one major element in common: a crazy person.

The gun in the first instance and the knife in the second were merely the tools and not the cause of the attack.

After the U.S. attack, liberals immediately demanded more gun control laws. Yet in China, there was no equivalent demand for more cutlery control. (There is never any demand for gun control in China because the communists already control all the guns and — who would have guessed? — control all the people.)

Congress is still debating new federal gun control laws as President Obama, metaphorically standing on the bodies of the Sandy Hook dead, urges immediate passage. These gun control laws simply don’t work to stop mass shootings because they don’t address the problem: the shooter, not what he’s shooting.

In fact, in a recent survey of over 15,000 police officers, 80 percent say “legally armed” civilians would have reduced casualties in the Sandy Hook and Aurora shootings. It’s a shame research results like this won’t make a difference, because liberal gun control efforts aren’t based on science, instead they are “faith-based,” worshiping at the altar of big government and liberal policy.

And this week another mass attack at a Texas community college proves my point. This time the crazy took a leaf from the Chinese playbook and used a knife to stab 14 people during his rampage.

Will this latest attack result in mental health reform that gets dangerous individuals off the street? Certainly not, in fact liberals are more likely to try to ban “assault knives.”

Fortunately, bills that would have banned “assault weapons” can serve as a handy template for banning “assault knives.”

Here are the deadly features liberals can use to define an “assault knife”:
  • Blade has a depression running parallel to the edge, often called a “blood groove.’
  • Knife has the ability to fold like a folding stock
  • Knife may be attached to a rifle like a bayonet
  • Knife handle has indentations for fingers like a pistol grip
  • Knife has a guard to protect the hand
  • Knife may be used in conjunction with a shield
  • Knife has a scabbard that may be attached to a belt
  • A Marine is likely to think the knife looks cool
Eating with our fingers when dining out will be a small price to pay if banning “assault knives” will, as the president says, “save one child’s life.”
