Republicans must show they will solve the problems of black Americans to gain their votes, says Texas Republican senate candidate Michael Williams.

Williams, a member of the Texas Railroad Commission and an African American, is running for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

“We have to do the same thing we do with other voting blocs,” he told Newsmax.TV’s Ashley Martella. “We have to go in and talk to the American blacks in an effort to solve the real problems they have.”

And what are those problems? “Closing the education gap, … bringing jobs into the inner city,” Williams said. “We want to be about the business of making sure they can succeed and they can save money and retire. We have to be about the business of doing that, and we will.”

Williams says he can help the process. “When I become a member of the U.S. Senate, that will be a game changer,” he said.

“That’s because I’ll be able to have a very direct conversation with the African American community about the direction not only of our party, but the direction that we think conservative ideas can enhance what’s happening in the black community.”

Williams says he will have no problems taking on the powers that be in Washington. “Not only am I a consistently committed conservative, I also have the courage to stand up to Harry Reid, … even President Obama and the Republican establishment if it becomes necessary.”

Unlike many politicians who advocate spending cuts, Williams has rejected pay raises for himself. The Texas legislature tried to give Commissioner Williams a pay hike three times, he said, which would have amounted to about $160,000.

And why didn’t he accept? “I’ve been trying to make the case that it’s important for us as elected officials to hold the line on spending. It’s a whole lot easier to make that case when I’m not sticking my own hand in the cookie jar.”
