Rep. West Rallies Florida Troops for Romney

By Newsmax Wires   |   Monday, 08 Oct 2012 09:54 AM

Feisty freshman Florida Rep. Allen West, R, rallied the Republican troops for presidential nominee Mitt Romney at a campaign rally in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Sunday.

While Romney extolled the virtues of bipartisanship in his speech, West took a harder tack. “They don’t believe in your individual sovereignty,” he told the estimated crowd of 12,000, referring to Democrats, Politico reports.

“They believe in taking more of your rights and freedoms and your liberties. They don’t believe in the free market. They believe in government, trickle-down government, as the governor talked about. That’s not America.”

Then West hit Democrats on foreign policy. “They honestly don’t understand that weakness is provocative, and that’s why we see our embassies being attacked,” he said. “That’s why we see our flags being torn down.”

West took four minutes to introduce Romney, and he enthusiastically yelled most of his remarks. The former Army lieutenant colonel was repeatedly interrupted by “USA” chants.

“It’s a race between what is simply called ‘the opportunity society’ versus ‘the dependency society,’” West said. “And what you saw Wednesday night was when the opportunity society takes the stage with the dependency society, the opportunity society wins!”

The congressman is in a heated battle of his own with Democrat Patrick Murphy after having been redistricted to Florida’s 18th District. Real Clear Politics rates the race as a toss-up.
