Massachusetts Republican Sen. Scott Brown is calling on Democratic rival Elizabeth Warren to “come clean” about claiming minority status when she taught at two major university law schools some 15 years ago.

“This story raises serious questions about Elizabeth Warren’s credibility,” said Brown spokesman Jim Barnett, referring reports in the Boston Herald noting that Warren had claimed minority status at the universities of Texas and Pennsylvania.

“The record now shows Prof. Warren did claim to be a ‘minority,’ and that she attempted to mislead the public about these facts when she was first asked about the issue last week,” Barnett added. “Prof. Warren needs to come clean about her motivations for making these claims and explain the contradictions between her rhetoric and the record.”

According to the Herald, Harvard University, where Warren teaches now, has also touted her minority status, which reportedly is tied to ancestors from the Cherokee and Delaware Tribes, as proof of the faculty’s diversity.

Warren had denied using her Native American heritage when she applied for the jobs. But her Senate campaign acknowledged Sunday that she did list her minority status in professional directories while teaching at the Texas and Pennsylvania law schools.

“The simple fact is that Elizabeth is proud of her heritage,” said a statement issued to the Herald Sunday night.

But the statement continued to deny that Brown’s minority listing played a role in her recruitment at Harvard. Her campaign said she was unaware the school had claimed her as minority member of the faculty.
