Trump Vows to Keep 'Concept of Medicare' Amid Reforms

CBS's "Face The Nation"

President Donald Trump promised Sunday, "the concept of Medicare, I'm not touching," even as he is inclined to address "waste, fraud, and abuse" in the program, he said Sunday.

"Let me more clear: I'm not going to touch it, because I said it," President Trump told host John Dickerson on CBS's "Face The Nation" of the campaign promise to keep Medicare in the upcoming healthcare, budget, and tax reforms.

"Now, waste, fraud and abuse, I'm going to touch," Trump clarified to Dickerson. "If there's something in Medicare that's been abused, I will touch that.

"There are certain things, as you know, that have been absolutely abused. There are certain provisions in Medicare that are horrible and abusive, and there's been terrible things happening. So, that kind of stuff, I will absolutely touch."

When pressed further by host Dickerson in his Sunday morning appearance, Medicare promises will be kept even as the program is reformed or tightened up to address "waste, fraud, and abuse," Trump added.

"The concept of Medicare, I'm not touching," Trump vowed to Dickerson.

Earlier in the interview, Trump also vowed preexisting conditions will be protected and covered in any healthcare legislation that moves in Congress and he signs into law.

"Preexisting conditions are in the bill," Trump told Dickerson. "And I just watched another network than yours, and they were saying, 'Preexisting is not covered.' Pre-existing conditions are in the bill. And I mandate it. I said, 'Has to be.'

". . . But we have now preexisting conditions in the bill. We've set up a pool for the preexisting conditions so that the premiums can be allowed to fall. We're taking across all of the borders or the lines, so that insurance companies can compete."
