Iowa Gains Political Attention from Trump, Cruz, Santorum

Iowa is used to attention from presidential hopefuls seeking to test the waters in the state's early caucuses, but the coming week will an influx of major political names descend upon the state more than two-and-a-half years before the nation's first nominating event.

The Des Moines Register reports four major events, beginning Thursday, will bring national attention for the home state to the first presidential nominating battle.

Rick Santorum, the winner of the GOP caucuses in 2012 is set to speak at four events from Thursday through Saturday, including one put on by Family Leader, a group that opposes same-sex marriage and abortion.

Santorum will be joined at that event by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and businessman/reality TV star Donald Trump. All three are possible presidential hopefuls in 2016.

Fred Karger, a former Republican presidential candidate who is openly gay, plans to attend the Iowa Ethics & Campaign Disclosure Board's meeting on Thursday. The Californian plans to call for an investigation into whether the National Organization for Marriage broke state law by not disclosing its donors when it attempted oust two state Supreme Court justices.

On Friday, Emily’s List will hold a forum with Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri. The "Madam President" campaign seeks to have a Democratic woman elected president.

Sen. Ted Cruz's father, Rafael, is also slated to speak at the Family Leader event. The elder Cruz is a Christian minister and refugee from Cuba.
