A number of top aides to GOP presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty have gone payless for months raising the prospect that the former Minnesota governor may not be able to keep up with other better funded candidates. Some of the staffers are temporarily accepting smaller checks while others signed on knowing they would be volunteers for the long term, The Washington Post reported.

“This isn’t ‘We’re broke and we can’t afford to pay you,’ ” an aide told the Post. “We’re raising exactly what we said we were going to raise. We’re paying our consultants exactly what they expected to be paid right now.” Spokesman Alex Conant declined to comment on staff pay but added that the campaign was “confident that we will raise the resources necessary to execute our strategy and win the nomination.”

Those working for little or no pay include top two strategists, Phil Musser and Jon Lerner, as well as advisers Sara Taylor Fagen, Terry Nelson and Brian Hook. Sources told the Post the advisers are earning nothing to $1,000 a month, plus reimbursements for expenses and the next round of financial reports will show a drop in fundraising following Pawlenty’s less than stellar debate performance.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is expected to report even better results than he did at this time in his first presidential run in 2008 when he pulled in $21 million. Rep. Michele Bachmann is also expected to report good results, the Post reported.
