Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., on Monday defended Donald Trump Jr.’s 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer who promised him damaging information on Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

"I think I probably would have done the same thing," Yoho told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer during "The Situation Room."

"It’s opposition research. Anybody that’s been in an election, you’re always looking to get the upper hand."

The New York Times on Sunday reported that Trump Jr. arranged the meeting with the Kremlin-linked lawyer after his father won the Republican presidential nomination and that it was attended by then-campaign manager Paul Manafort and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Yoho said he didn’t think the meeting was inappropriate.

"I don’t think it was inappropriate for what he did. If you’ve got information about an opponent running against you, wouldn’t you want that information –– to vet it, to see if it’s real information, and to use it accordingly? And you can’t do that if you don’t have the initial meeting."
