The TeaParty.net has endorsed the re-election of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in light of his strong criticism of the Internal Revenue Service for targeting conservative groups.
According to The Hill
, the announcement is considered significant because there had been talk that McConnell might face a more conservative challenger in his primary next year for the Kentucky Senate seat he has held for five terms.
"With the new revelations that the IRS has been targeting tea party groups, we need Sen. McConnell more than ever," said Niger Innis, the group's chief strategist.
"He was sounding the alarm about the government's assault on our First Amendment rights years ago, even when it fell on deaf ears. We all owe Sen. McConnell a debt for his vision and courage."
McConnell was one of the first in Congress to demand the resignation of acting IRS Commissioner Stephen Miller on Monday.
In an interview with CNBC Tuesday, McConnell said the "huge" IRS scandal is just the tip of the iceberg in what he called Obama administration attacks against conservatives and First Amendment rights.
"What you've got is [an administration] that, based on the attorney general's report, engaged in discriminating against conservative groups who had criticized the administration," he said. "This is a huge, huge story."
