America’s young people are falling out of love with President Barack Obama.

In a new poll conducted for Students for Life of America, 49 percent of young voters (18-24 years old) think that Obama has done a “fair” or “poor” job as president, which is a double-digit drop in support from the 2008 campaign, where he received 66 percent support from newly-minted voters.

The poll of 805 younger voters conducted May 25-June 1 shows Obama leading Romney 53 percent to 25 percent but “few voters are paying close attention at this early stage of the race, suggesting the ballot test remains fluid,” according to SFLA’s Executive Director, Kristan Hawkins.

“With skyrocketing student debt and grim unemployment prospects for those out of college, young voters’ collective love affair with the president has abated,” Hawkins wrote. “Results from the recent recall election in Wisconsin were consistent in showing a far less liberal voting bloc than the one four years and if that election is any indication, young adults are much more open to voting conservative in 2012 than they were in 2008.”

The poll also showed most young people “would be less likely to vote for a candidate who supports forcing institutions to pay for procedures that violate their conscience or religious beliefs” by 42 percent to 24 percent.

The pollsters pointed out, "Youth are 'pro-contraception' not 'pro-abortion,' " as they split with 45 percent pro-choice and 44 percent pro-life.
