Quinnipiac: Spitzer Has Solid Lead in NYC Comptroller Race

By Courtney Coren   |   Wednesday, 14 Aug 2013 03:41 PM

Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has a solid lead of 56 to 37 percent over Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer in the race for New York City comptroller, a new poll finds.

According to the latest Quinnipiac University Poll released Wednesday, black voters favor Spitzer 3-1 over Stringer, but there is almost no gender gap among voters. Spitzer has 58 percent of the male vote and 54 percent of the female vote.

The poll of 579 likely Democratic primary voters taken August 7 - 12 also found that 68 percent of Spitzer voters and 74 percent of Stringer voters are unlikely to change their mind between now and the primary election on September 10.

"Everyone seems to be against former Gov. Eliot Spitzer except the voters, especially black voters," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Spitzer is all over the TV screens, building on his better name recognition and leaving Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer in the dust," he added.

The disgraced former New York governor left office in March 2008 after it was revealed that he had hired a Washington, D.C. area escort service very similar to the ones he cracked down on as the state attorney general.

While 23 percent of Democrat voters say that Spitzer's indiscretions disqualify him from the job, 44 percent say that they does not, and 32 percent say aren't an issue for them at all.
