Incoming New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio may be set to dump his communications director Lis Smith after it was revealed that she is the girlfriend of the state's former governor Eliot Spitzer, who was forced to resign over a prostitution scandal.
The mayor-elect's aides have interviewed several possible replacements for 31-year-old Smith, de Blasio's current spokeswoman, according to the New York Post
Spitzer, who resigned as New York governor in 2008 after reports surfaced that he was paying for high-end prostitutes, has been seen surreptitiously entering and leaving Smith's apartment building in New York City, the Post reports.
After the romance was exposed
, Spitzer and his estranged wife Silda, the mother of his three grown daughters, announced that their marriage was over. The next day Spitzer, 54, attended a Christmas party at the home of Smith's parents.
De Blasio, who reportedly was "blindsided" by news of the relationship, said earlier this week that he hasn't decided yet whether to keep Smith on his staff.
The incoming mayor, who is taking over from Michael Bloomberg on January 1, attacked Spitzer in August after the ex-governor announced that he was running for the city comptroller's office.
Calling him a "child of the elite," de Blasio said that Spitzer had "invalidated himself by his shameful actions when he was in public office." Spitzer lost the Democratic primary to Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.
