New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has received a vote of confidence from Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who says the Garden State's top public official remains fit to be chairman of the Republican Governors Association.

Walker also said he would welcome the support of Christie in his own re-election campaign, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Walker's optimistic appraisal comes as the Bridge-gate scandal surrounding Christie's administration continues to make headlines.

Christie has denied knowing his top aides ordered the closure of lanes to the George Washington Bridge as political payback for the mayor of Fort Lee declining to endorse their boss' reelection.

"I talked to him personally, and he told me exactly what he said to the public, and that's the reason to believe him," Walker said.

Walker indicated that he was impressed with the way Christie has responded to the George Washington Bridge scandal, specifically with last week's marathon news conference.

Referring to that lengthy press conference, Walker added:

"I don't think I've ever seen a politician spend nearly two hours in front of the media taking every question out there."

According to the Journal Sentinel, Walker expects Christie to continue as Republican Governors Association chairman, and remain an active member of the National Governors Association.

"Assuming everything stays as he's announced, I don't see that as a problem," Walker said.

Until Bridge-gate broke, Christie was considered the frontrunner for the next GOP presidential nomination. Walker is also considered a possible Republican choice.
