Sen. John McCain's attempts to get a Senate vote on the nomination of Patrick Shanahan as deputy defense secretary were blocked by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the Washington Examiner reported.

"(Friday), the current deputy secretary of defense, Bob Work, will leave his office," McCain, R-Ariz., said on the Senate floor. "There simply is no more time to delay in moving the nomination of Patrick Shanahan."

Shanahan is a Boeing executive who was nominated by President Donald Trump to fill the defense post, according to the Examiner.

McCain had first proposed an immediate consent vote on Shanahan's behalf on Thursday, but Schumer, D-N.Y., objected. McCain then called for a vote on Shanahan for Monday night, but Schumer again objected and blocked any attempt to fast-track the vote, the website reported.

"We'd be happy to consider the nominee in regular order and maybe once things change a little bit in healthcare we can, with the consent of my friends on this side of the aisle, move a lot of things quickly," Schumer said.

And McCain responded: "Why in the world we would be wasting time on the ambassador to Japan when we have Department of Defense nominees in line is something I can neither account for nor condone. I don't agree with the senator from New York, but I understand his frustration."

Just days earlier Marc Short, White House legislative affairs director, had accused Senate Democrats of "conducting the slowest confirmation process in American history," Roll Call reported.

And he blasted Schumer for running "an unprecedented campaign of obstruction."

But Schumer has blamed the White House for the delays.

"No administration in recent memory has been slower in sending nominations to the Senate," he said, noting the lack of ethics documents and other pieces of information.
