Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is campaigning with former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel Thursday to support her bid to replace retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss in the U.S. Senate.

"We are excited and honored that Governor Plain chose to make her first appearance of the 2014 cycle for Karen Handel in Georgia," said Corry Bliss, Handel's campaign manager.

Palin announced that she was endorsing the tea party candidate a week ago, providing a much-needed boost for Handel, who was 19 points behind frontrunner businessman David Purdue, according to the latest poll from SurveyUSA.

"The grassroots excitement since Governor Palin's endorsement has been tremendous," Bliss added. "Since the endorsement last week, the campaign has raised well over $100,000."

Her campaign released a radio ad Wednesday touting Palin's endorsement:

Palin was scheduled to campaign with Handel at the South Fulton Republican Women's monthly meeting Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. and speak at a private fundraiser on her behalf following the luncheon.

Handel announced her candidacy in May 2013, after Chambliss announced his retirement. The primary is May 20.

Handel is part of a crowded GOP field with six other Republicans running to replace Chambliss.
