Rick Santorum’s standing with Republican women has improved even as he become more vocal in his opposition to abortion and expressed misgivings about birth control. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll found that since January Santorum’s popularity with GOP women has jumped 13 points.
Santorum’s standing among Republican women now rivals his chief opponent Mitt Romney. The poll found that 57 percent of Republican women had a favorable view of Santorum compared to Romney’s 61 percent.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s standing among women has taken a nose dive since late last year when he was polling in the 60 percent range. The poll showed his favorability rating among GOP women was now at 37 percent.

However, the popularity of the Republican field among Democratic and independent women remains weak. Gingrich is viewed unfavorably by 63 percent of Democratic women and 58 percent of independent women, Romney by 55 and 43 respectively and Santorum by 40 percent and 36 percent.

The poll surveyed over 1,000 adults from Feb. 15 to the 19.
