Rush Limbaugh: Free Speech In Grave Danger

By Jim Meyers   |   Wednesday, 10 Jun 2009 03:56 PM

The threat to free speech in America is an "ever-present danger," top-ranked radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh declared in accepting the Freedom of Speech Award at the 12th annual New Media Conference sponsored by Talkers magazine.

Limbaugh was lauded on June 6 in New York “for the massive attention he garnered in the mainstream press as a result of statements made on the air critical of the President of the United States and particular branches of the Federal government that went on to spark a national dialogue and debate — a process that reflects the very heart of the First Amendment,” Talkers announced earlier.

In his speech at the awards presentation, Limbaugh did not specifically mention President Barack Obama, the Democratic Party or liberals, but it was clear he was referring to threats from the left to silence conservative talk radio when he said:

"Freedom of speech is something that we Americans, I think, have always taken for granted. We were born to it. We think that is part of our natural spirit, which it is. Freedom is.

"But what we all have come to know, at least I have over the course of my 20 years, is that I have been made aware that there are people who don't like what people say. For it offends them or whatever reason. And rather than leave it alone, turn it off, or run away, there are people who want to silence those who say things they don't agree with.

"That is an ever-present danger, and it is something that we all have to be vigilant against. And the best way to engage in free speech is to engage in free speech, to not be afraid of what somebody is going to think about what you say."

Limbaugh, the first person to receive the Freedom of Speech Award twice, also said: "The best way to get the people off your case who want to shut you up is to keep shouting louder."

And he concluded his speech, which was carried in its entirety on Newsmax.TV: "Don't give anybody the power to offend you. You turn that power over and you're giving away who you are.

"We have too many special interest groups in this country based on being offended, and that's led to whole groups of people thinking that they're victims of an unfair unjust society in the greatest country in the world with more opportunity still today than ever before in human history."
