During a media conference call, Sat., former Speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio sallied forth on why Barack Obama is not the right choice for Florida – suggesting that John McCain better understands the balancing act between too much regulation and too little.

Rubio argued that Florida voters will be drawn to the lure of the free market and less regulation than Obama would bring.

“Florida is a state that intrinsically understands that larger government is not the answer,” Rubio declared. “Florida is comprised of people who came here to get away from that -- they are getting away from overburdened and oversized economy. They didn’t just come for the weather.’’

“Floridians understand that government cannot create economic prosperity,” Rubio added. “Ultimately the reason that people become prosperous, make more money for themselves and allow their children to have a life better than their own is not government. All of those things work when there is a fair, free market in place.”

When reminded that McCain just called for a new federal agency to fix the financial mess and impose significant regulation, Rubio answered:

“Let’s be honest. The bottom line here is there is a role for government to play in regulation. But just like in sports, no one pays to watch the referees. There’s a difference between ensuring fairness and safety -- and regulation that exists to justify the regulators. That’s a difference that Republicans understand more than Democrats.”

Rubio went on to predict that the race for Florida’s 27 electoral votes will remain tight to the end but that McCain will prevail.

“Florida’s vote is going to reflect the national vote,” Rubio said. “There isn’t a major issue that isn’t important in Florida. I expect it will be very competitive; Florida always is. John McCain has momentum and he’ll win.”

He also lambasted a new Obama TV ad that compares McCain to Rush Limbaugh when it comes to immigration. “It doesn’t just stretch the truth but offends it,” Rubio said.

The conference call was organized by the McCain campaign while Obama was campaigning in Jacksonville.
