Freshman Sen. Marco Rubio raised about $2.3 million in the first quarter from 15,000 donors across all 50 states, his aides said.

About half the money came from small donations. The contributions went to three Rubio entities: his Senate re-election campaign account, his political action committee, and a joint fundraising committee, The Hill reports.

The first-quarter performance eclipsed the Florida Republican's fundraising total for all of 2012, one of his aides told The Hill.

The money came in at a time when Rubio was being talked up as potential 2016 presidential candidate and as he garners attention as one of eight senators working to fashion a comprehensive bipartisan immigration reform bill.

The dollar figures are sure to keep talk of a possible presidential bid front and center.

Rubio was asked by CNN on Sunday how his work on immigration reform might affect a possible run for the White House.

"My belief has been if I do my job well, I'll have options in the future, whether it's run for re-election, run for something else or give someone else a chance at public service," he said.
