Karl Rove says the White House is "playing with dynamite" by pushing an agenda on income inequality that the Republican strategist charges will take from people who have and "give to those that don't have as much."

"I think the administration is playing with dynamite," Rove, former deputy chief of staff to President George W. Bush, said Monday on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"We have liberals, like the new mayor of New York and, apparently, President [Barack] Obama and his administration saying, 'What can we do to take from those that have, and give to those that don't have as much?'" Rove added.

He claimed that any positives the Democrats might enjoy from pushing such an agenda would be short-lived.

"In the short run, they get some advantage from talking about the minimum wage and the extension of unemployment benefits. But, the more this becomes a question of taking from those that have to those that don't have, the more they engage the American people in a very negative way," said Rove, now a Fox News contributor.

Rove, however, said the effects of Obamacare would be "long-lived," because changes to the nation's healthcare system will be felt "through the balance of the year." For that reason, he said the White House wants to talk about "anything . . . except Obamacare."

"[Income inequality] is, first and foremost, an attempt to pivot away from something that is incredibly damaging to the administration," he said.
