Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., praised actions President Donald Trump took Thursday that are designed to make low-cost healthcare plans more available.

"Obamacare is broken and hurting hard-working Americans every day through skyrocketing premiums and reduced consumer choice," Johnson said in a statement. "Today's executive action will help make insurance more accessible and affordable, including by expanding the availability of short-term, limited duration plans.

"I applaud the administration for taking this meaningful step toward legalizing affordable health insurance for the forgotten men and women of Obamacare."

Johnson was one of 14 senators who sent a letter to Trump earlier this year, asking the president to spike regulations put in place during the Obama administration that made it more difficult for Americans to buy cheaper health insurance.

Trump signed an executive order at the White House that would ease restrictions on purchasing short-term insurance plans. It would also allow employers to set aside pre-tax money for workers who want to buy health insurance on their own.

The order will not be implemented for several months, however, because the order has to clear some governmental hurdles before it is made official.
