Ann Romney, the wife of Republican presidential front-runner Mitt, may turn into Democrats’ worst nightmare. She could have the most impact of a potential first lady in any presidential race in the country’s history, according to Politico
Ann’s role in the general election campaign could be particularly important given first lady Michelle Obama’s own strong popularity. And Ann Romney could help make up for the inability shown by her husband to connect with average Americans, Politico says.
She can particularly aid the former Massachusetts governor in making an inroad with women, who played a huge role in President Barack Obama’s 2008 victory. Mitt himself is quick to acknowledge his wife’s strengths. "I wish Ann, my wife were here," he said at a campaign event in Wisconsin Sunday. "She’s going across the country and talking with women. We have work to do, to make sure we take our message to the women of America."
Outsiders recognize her pivotal role as well. “She’s terribly important in that she is actually Mitt’s connection to the base,” GOP strategist Alex Castellanos told Politico. “His link to the base doesn’t come from ideology. It comes from family values channeled through Ann. She’s the authentic core of Romney’s conservative principles.”
