Scott Crider, founder of the website “Dogs Against Romney,” may be vindicated in his quest to prove that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was cruel to his dog, Seamus, when he kept the dog on the car roof during a long family trip.

A slightly tongue-in-jowl survey from the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling firm reveals that 68 percent of 900 registered voters believe that Romney’s action was “inhumane,” although he did have Seamus in a kennel. Just 14 percent said that making a dog travel on the roof is humane, while 18 percent said they weren’t sure.

Among voters who said they are Romney supporters, 17 percent said his treatment of Seamus made them less likely to vote for him.

As for who would be a better president for dogs, 37 percent opted for President Barack Obama, apparently because the Obama family dog, Bo, lives a pretty charmed life, to 21 percent for Romney — and 42 percent not holding an opinion either way.

Crider launched his website www.dogsagainstromney.com in 2007, outraged like other dog lovers, after hearing that Romney drove his family to Canada with the family’s Irish Setter in a kennel strapped to the roof of their station wagon.

After Seamus suffered from diarrhea, Romney pulled into a gas station, hosed down the dog and the car, and continued on the 12-hour trek.

The website features official merchandise, including dogs against Romney T-shirts and matching bandanas and shirts for dogs.
