The Mitt Romney campaign is planning to use Utah as a staging ground for the coming presidential election battles this fall, especially in Western swing states such as Colorado and Nevada.

According to the Boston Globe, Utah is the safest state on the Republican candidate’s electoral map because many of its residents share Romney’s Mormon faith and the state has plenty of young supporters and volunteers eager to help turn out the vote across the country.

The state also has shown its willingness to provide plenty of financial backing for Romney’s presidential bid, the Globe reported Monday.

Individuals and businesses in Utah have donated more than $3.6 million directly to Romney’s campaign so far and an additional $2.5 million to the Restore Our Future super PAC backing the former Massachusetts governor’s run for the White House.

That makes the state sixth overall in terms of donations to the Romney effort even though it ranks 34th in population nationwide, the Globe noted.

“Even during the primary days it was a big asset for us,’’ Sarah Nelson, the Romney campaign’s political director for the West Coast, told the Globe. “It was one of the number one states in the country for phone banking.’’

Plans are already in the works to help turnout voters all across the country, with the state Republican Party even participating in plans to move voters to the polls in keys states outside Utah.

Young Romney supporters at Brigham Young University are also ready to hit the campaign trail to help with grassroots organizing on the ground and online, where a website called “Mitt Romney Central” is up and running.

“We’re going to move bodies to those battleground states and be involved on the ground, there’s no doubt about it,’’ said Utah GOP chairman Thomas Wright. “There’s so many people here who are motivated. . . . People are excited about Mitt Romney.’’
