Many Republicans have criticized presidential candidate Mitt Romney for running a tepid, uninspiring campaign. Now even some of his own supporters on Capitol Hill and Republican strategists are criticizing his campaign strategy, The Hill reports.

Backers say Romney did not put enough energy into the races in Minnesota, Missouri, and Colorado, which he lost last week. And they say those defeats make it imperative for Romney to score big victories in Michigan and Arizona Feb. 28 if he wants to avoid an extended race for the nomination.

So he should consider shifting focus away from Super Tuesday states on March 6 to make sure he wins two states that were once considered easy victories.

“I think it was a big mistake to ignore those states,” an unnamed senator who endorsed Romney told The Hill, referring to Minnesota, Missouri, and Colorado. “Now you have three weeks of nothing except for Michigan and Arizona.”

The senator is worried that the light schedule ahead of Super Tuesday offers Rick Santorum an opportunity to leverage his victories last week into bountiful campaign donations and media coverage.

Now is the time for Romney to prove his organizational strength, Rob Collins, a GOP strategist at Purple Strategies, told The Hill.

“He’s running as the one who has the most ability to win the national campaign,” Collins said. “If he has the ability, I encourage him to use the ability.”
