Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has named former President George H.W. Bush and former Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan.  both war heroes, to the posts of honorary co-chairmen of his veterans campaign group.

The outfit is called “Veterans and Military Families for Romney,” and includes many heavyweight Republicans who are veterans, including Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and James Inhofe of Oklahoma. Arizona Sen. John McCain is one of the group’s four national chairmen, The Hill reports.

"Veterans and their families sacrifice so much for our country. It is important that we recognize and honor the work that they do to keep us safe and free," Romney said in a statement on his campaign web site.

"As president, I will be an advocate for veterans and their families and will always fight to ensure that they get the opportunities and care they have earned.”

For his part, Bush, who served in World War II, said, "I have full faith in Gov. Romney's commitment to ensuring a bright future for our brave men and women who have served America with integrity and distinction."

A Gallup poll released in May showed Romney way ahead of President Barack Obama in terms of support from former military personnel. Among registered veteran voters, 58 percent backed Romney, compared to only 34 percent for Obama. Among males, the gap was even wider, with Romney leading 60 percent to 32 percent.
