Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum on Saturday called Washington "as toxic a place I’ve seen" and said "it’s sort of nice to be on the outside in the private sector" as CEO of the EchoLight Studios film-production company.

"My focus right now is doing a good job with this movie company and trying to put it on the right path to be successful as a company," the 2012 Republican presidential candidate told Politico. "I don’t miss what’s going in Washington, D.C., that’s for darn sure."

But Santorum has not "given up looking at 2016 as a possibility" either, he said.

EchoLight's second offering since Santorum took over last year is "The Redemption of Henry Myers," which is scheduled to premiere on Sunday at 9 p.m. EST on the Hallmark Movie Channel.

The film depicts the story of a Western outlaw's life on the frontier, he said. During the holiday season, the Christian movie company produced "The Christmas Candle," which played in movie theaters nationwide. It grossed more than $1.6 million in its limited, three-week run in the U.S.

"There’s [a] message for everybody out there as to how we forgive. And do we forgive?" Santorum told Politico regarding the latest offering. "And the process by which you have to go through to do that."

More movies are due out from EchoLight this year, Santorum said, including a documentary on religious freedom — and four others are expected to be released next year.

He admitted that selling movies to television executives can be as tough as pitching yourself to voters.

"If you have a good product, that helps a lot," Santorum told Politico. "And so we felt like we have a good product with our films — and, obviously, I felt we have a pretty good product with me."
