Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will host a fundraiser against his Republican counterpart Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on behalf of the Kentucky senator's 2014 Democrat opponent.

The luncheon Reid is hosting for Kentucky secretary of state Alison Lundergan Grimes is scheduled for October 11 at McCormick & Schmick's in Las Vegas. Tickets for the event start at $1,000 for a guest, $2,600 for a co-host, and $5,000 for a 'PAC' co-host.

This comes after Reid told Politico last year that he didn't think it would be appropriate for him to publicly campaign against McConnell.

While it is not common for a Senate majority leader to campaign against a Senate minority leader, it happened in 2004 when GOP Majority Leader Bill Frist campaigned against Minority Leader Tom Daschle — the re-election bid ended Daschle Senate career.

When the Nevada Democrat was up for re-election in 2010, McConnell hosted a fundraiser for Reid's Republican opponent Sharron Angle after saying that he wouldn't.

While Grimes has the support of several big Democratic donors such as Dreamworks executive Jeffrey Katzenberg and New York fundraiser Michael Pratt as well as former President Bill Clinton and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, defeating a five term Republican senator in a red state like Kentucky will be no small task.

"It should tell Kentuckians all they need to know that the biggest supporter of Alison Lundergan Grimes' campaign is Harry Reid, the man who thinks 'coal makes us sick,'" Kelsey Cooper, communications director of the Republican Party of Kentucky, told Time Warner Cable's cn|2 channel in Louisville.

"If Alison was elected to the Senate, it would ensure that liberal Harry Reid and Barack Obama continue to set national coal policy rather than a Kentucky champion for coal, Mitch McConnell."
