The Republican party, facing historically-low approval ratings, can rebound by saying what it's "for" and not what it's "against," Faith and Freedom Coalition founder Ralph Reed said Monday.

"Number one, you've got to say what you're for, not just what you're against. It's not enough being against Obamacare. What's our plan?" Reed said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Republicans also need to recruit candidates who are "effective messengers," Reed said.
"Secondly, you have to . . . win some candidates who are effective messengers, who can win people who even don't always agree with you on every issue. You look at really good politicians, they get people to vote for them who don't necessarily agree with them on everything," he added.

"Candidates matter," Reed continued to stress, pointing to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as an example of the kind of popular candidate who has strong conservative views but still manages to attract voters across the political spectrum.

"Chris Christie is pro-life. He's pro-marriage. He's tried to cut income taxes. He's held the line on property taxes. What it shows . . . is that candidates matter," he said. "I think Christie is an archetype of the gubernatorial wing of the party."

When it comes to the disastrous rollout of Obamacare, Reed indicated the best strategy for Republicans is to keep a low profile because administration and Democratic supporters of the law are "committing suicide."

"The first thing you do is, when your opponent is in the process of committing suicide, you stay out of camera range," Reed said.
